Why it's a good idea to have chocolate for Brunch
According to various sources, including studies by researchers at Tel Aviv University (so, you know it's true), there are many benefits to starting the day with a square or two of the good stuff. So, forget what dentists or your parents used to say - here are 10 reasons why you should be indulging in some morning chocolate:
You’ve got all day to burn it off
Eating chocolate for Breakfast might sound counter-intuitive if you’re watching what you eat, but it has been shown to boost the metabolism. You have the entire day to burn off the calories - and, by satisfying your sweet tooth first thing in the morning, you won’t crave sugar and carbs during the day. Sweet!
Chocolate makes you happy
And not just because it’s a favourite sweet treat! Dark chocolate is known to encourage the production of endorphins - the happy chemical. It also contains serotonin, which works as an anti-depressant. If you’re feeling down or anxious, try including a small amount of dark chocolate in your daily diet.
The French do it
They’re arguably the chicest nation in Europe, and the French regularly start their day with chocolatey goodness. Pain au chocolat avec chocolat chaud, anyone?
It’s chock-full of antioxidants
Studies have shown that cocoa and dark chocolate have more antioxidants, polyphenols and flavanols than blueberries and acai berries. These things can help protect skin from sun damage and reduce heart disease risk. Dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa is extremely nutritious- a 100g bar contains 58% of the RDI for Magnesium and 67% of the RDI for Iron as well as being high in copper, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium.
It improves your memory
Chocolate can improve cognitive functions, including memory, thanks to being high in those trusty flavanols and stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine.
It’s got caffeine in
On a rushed morning, fitting in that vital cup of coffee can be hard- it’s much easier to eat a bit of chocolate! Cocoa contains a small amount of caffeine that can help you feel awake, stay alert and be prepared the day ahead. Or if you’ve got the time, go for a hot chocolate instead.
Remember eating all your Easter eggs for Breakfast as a kid? The only thing sweeter than chocolate is nostalgia.
Brunch is supposed to be decadent
According to Guy Beringer’s Plea, you’re supposed to go all out at Brunch. And what’s more decadent than chocolate?
It tastes good
Let’s keep it simple - chocolate just tastes great. If you’re a chocolate connoisseur, there’s no reason not to Brunch on chocolate.
