Traveled up to York from the Midlands. Wasn’t our first visit to the Toby Carvery chain. As expected the carvery was very good. Usual choices of meat available, beef, turkey, gammon and pork, along with the much as you can eat vegetables. We had to wait 10 minutes or so for the fresh meat and vegetables to arrive and it was definitely worth it. It would have been unforgivable not to have a giant Yorkshire pudding whilst visiting York. Maybe it’s just me but I genuinely believe it tasted better than any other Yorkshire puddings that I’ve had. A wide choice of other popular pub dishes also available from the regular menu. Had to finish off with the popular Apple Pie and hot custard. Simply delicious. Great service from Tom and the team. Extremely polite and courteous. Atmosphere was busy as expected. The place however, could do with a lick of paint just to spruce up the rustic look and feel.

It was one of the most satisfying plates I have ever eaten at a restaurant. The quality of the food and sauces was really great. The place has its own spirit. The fact that the place is not in a central location also supports this unique spirit. The staff was very kind. It was a nice experience. Thank you to the entire team.

Decent food, however, the service did cause us to feel unwanted. We were made to order drinks as we walked to the table despite not having looked at a menu. We were then left alone for 20+ minutes as we were not sure how the ordering worked there. We had to walk around to find someone to come take our order. The food was decent and the person serving the meats was very nice. We then asked for the bill, although we did have to wait over 20 minutes to receive it. No one came to take payment again for a while, so we had to hunt someone down to pay it. This was all while the restaurant was not at all busy. Overall, it was a fine experience, cheap good food, but I do think the staff should have been more interested in us and at least explain to us the basics of how it all worked, rather than assume we know what to do. I would go again, but would certainly hope that we feel more welcome next time.
