Exceptional food in warm, welcoming surroundings, The White Bear in Kennington is a family-friendly gastropub with culinary tricks in spades.
It’s attached to the White Bear Theatre, a fringe dramatics group who regularly host events at The White Bear and can be seen trudging through to stock up on delicious Brunch and Sunday Lunch.
An old country saloon feel with distressed wood furniture and panelling and a huge horseshoe bar stocked full of ales and spirits, plus old-timey photos along the walls all combine to cement The White Bear’s status as a classic, old-school favourite. Pull up a leather armchair by the roaring open fire or dine at the airy, more modern dining room. The best spot, however, is the outdoor terrace, a whimsical beer garden with a canopy of trees overhead and wooden benches to sprawl over in warmer climes. It’s a space designed to suit all the family.
Brunch dishes include a Girolle mushroom salad with marrow and walnut quiche watercress and capers, beer-battered cod sandwich and a slow cooked brisket with sweet potato hash and eggs. For a decadent, hair-of-the-dog treat, try the Cumberland sausage, fried onion and mustard mayo roll with fries.
No country-style pub would be complete without a Sunday Roast and The White Bear do theirs with the utmost finesse. Pick from a range of locally-sourced meats (our favourite is the rolled pork belly) served with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, seasonal veggies and gravy or go the whole hog and get a Sunday Roast sharer between 2-3 of you for just £60.
Kennington Underground is ideally located just a minute up the road from The White Bear.
