Despite the unpromising name, Dirty Dicks has been flourishing in its little corner of Bishopgate since the 18th century and shows no sign of stopping now.

Set across two glorious floors, the expansive space has cosy, intimate corners along with window seats and long benches for families to gather round. Low beams, exposed brick and comfy slouching sofas give it a traditional pub feel, though the food is as innovative as they come.

Join them on Sundays for a proper classic roast. Start off with BBQ baby back ribs a smoked ham and cheese croquette with orange and crème fraiche or a steaming bowl of veg soup before the hearty, tender meats – ranging from pressed lamb 21-day aged striploin and roast lemon and thyme chicken – with all the trimmings.

Dessert is a spectacle here too, with a quintessentially British carrot cake served with lemon sorbet, an array of British cheeses and a gooey chocolate brownie being just a smattering of the treats on display.
