Premium cuts of meat, a cool cellar-like aesthetic and decadent desserts: if you’re not heading to Alston Bar & Beef this Sunday, you’re missing out big time.

Blue back-lit walls and exposed stone give the impression of an icy-cool cavern, though it’s as warm and welcoming as they come, with tiny table lamps dotted around the tables and soft leather banquettes to unwind along.

For just £35, you can indulge in three delicious courses. Start with a Scottish twist on the French onion soup with haggis or cider battered king prawns. Meat options are limited to roast chicken or roast Tweed Valley rump so you know they’ve honed and finessed it into perfection. These are served with all the trimmings - though you need to leave room for the desserts. Try the spiced poached pear trifle or the orange & ginger olive oil cake with almond brittle and coconut ice cream.

We booked our table at Alston through First Table (50% off food), and it was an amazing experience. The restaurant is tucked under Glasgow Central, offering an atmospheric setting with a unique vibe. It was exceptionally muggy in Glasgow and the temperature was just perfect below the stone arches. For starters. We had the Scallops and the Reuben on toast, both delicious and a decent portion. For mains we both went for the fillet, my friend got hers rare with mash and peppercorn sauce. I love a blue steak but from many a disappointment I went for rare too, however the amazing and super friendly server came back to say the chef was confident he could cook me the perfect blue steak and if not we would get our starters for free! Challenge excepted!! Holy steak 😜 it was perfect… .unfortunately 🙄 I have walked past this place on numerous occasion’s and didn’t even know it was there and what amazing food they offered, and a wee cool bar side seeing as all the bars have been closed in the station, had it not been for First Table I would probably kept walking past. They need to up their marketing. Super lovely staff, fantastic food and setting. X

The service and atmosphere can’t fault anything. However overall the Sunday roast was quite disappointing, it tasted fine, well cooked and seasoned. But the amount of cabbage to compensate how little meat there was on the plate was ridiculous… we only received two thin slices of beef on the plate. I checked previous photos in the reviews and what I received was a third… for £30 It was the same for the rest of my table as we all ordered the same Sunday roast option. We were all left disappointed and didn’t bother ordering dessert. Photo included, before I started eating for reference.

Heard good things about the restaurant, so my wife and I booked for Sunday while in town and we certainly weren't disappointed. It was absolutely fantastic. The service was attentive and I found it refreshing to see somewhere offer local beers (from Drygate) rather than the usual mass produced dross other restaurants serve. We opted for the Sunday fixed menu of French onion & haggis soup, followed by roast tweed valley beef. Both were brilliant & highly recommend.
