Better known as a performing arts hub, The Old Joint Stock doubles up as a proper, traditional pub with hearty roasts and welcoming surroundings.
The original features and fixtures have been painstakingly preserved since its creation back in 1862. The grand interior boasts a huge domed ceiling, chandeliers, crimson walls and a huge, deep mahogany bar, a cross between an opera house and a railway tavern. It’s clear why creatives are drawn here and, despite the size of the space, it has a distinctly intimate feel.
Daily breakfast dishes range from Full English, banana waffles, avocado on toast and Eggs Benedict, while Sunday’s are all about the proper British tradition: the roast. Kick things off with a range of social plates, designed to be shared between friends, which include a black pudding scotch egg, chorizo croquettes and a cheddar rarebit with chutney.
Next up, the meats: sirloin of dry-aged beef, pork loin, Norfolk chicken and a roast Usk Vale turkey, all which come with the classic trimmings and red wine gravy. Still have room for dessert? Try the white chocolate panna cotta or a Vintage Ale sticky toffee pudding which is topped with buffalo milk salted caramel ice cream.
