I Came for Elegance, Left with Regret. WHAT A JOKE. I recommend the Great Room Restaurant Merchant Hotel to absolutely NO ONE. We went to celebrate our anniversary and I made a reservation for the tasting menu well in advance of our dining date. Server couldn't tell me anything about the wines save for what he read off the back of the bottle, and none of them were worth writing home about. Scallops were yummy but basically bite size. The "cheese course" was the SADDEST thing I have ever seen in my life: two wee blocks of cheese with a dab of chutney. For 9£/~$12 USD). Egregious! I mentioned my disappointment to the waiter and HE JUST SHRUGGED. Tried to get a refund to no avail. The architecture is lovely but with lighting so low you can barely see the food in front of you (I wonder now if perhaps this is by design?) Wish I could give this place zero stars; the nicest thing I can say about it is they have a handicap accessible bathroom. tl;dr: AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Would have given 5* for the food but my Tipsy Cake although tasty was dry and the small quantity of ice cream wasn't enough to save it! No matter, overall the meal was excellent, the staff friendly and attentive and the surroundings sumptuous. I look forward to going again.

Wow this was a stunning restaurant within the Merchant hotel (where we were staying for two nights). Got a reservation easily on a Saturday night. Fillet steak medium was amazing, with a side of garlic potatoes. Great experience with the tableside Irish Coffee too. I recommend!
